Within Y1, assessment is used to established what the children can do, where there are misconceptions, where re-modelling is necessary and where reteaching is necessary; as well as how far along the journey to proficiency the children are – so they may be able to identify half and whole turns but not yet embedded quarter and three-quarter turns which would be the next steps. End of term summative assessments have also continued this year to enable for comparisons to be completed as the children move through the school.
During the introduction I often use different types of questioning to assess what the children already know. Also, as the lesson goes on i am able to formatively assess the children’s work whilst walking around and observing. The initial questioning also helps me to see what additional information i am required to review and address during the lesson. End of unit tests are also a good way to accurately assess what the children have fully understood and grasped. I an then able to use this information to inform future lessons.
In Year 2, assessment is key to understanding how pupils are progressing. I use formative assessment throughout the lesson to assess the children’s current grasp of the concepts I am teaching, as well as using it to allow me to address any misconceptions. With regards to summative assessment, I have done practice SATs tests throughout the year to allow me to spot any holes within the children’s knowledge and see how they are progressing.
